How Do You Start Saying Yes?

Happy Wednesday to everyone! My time in California is coming to an end…and I might even be on an airplane as you are reading this! I will have some pictures and an update on my trip sometime next week.

Today we have a guest post from Robyn Guthrie (the girl on the left in the above photo) who has a blog called The Adventure Journal. Robyn is going to share a little bit about how we can each start saying “yes” in our lives more often! Hope you enjoy it!

How Do You Start Saying Yes?

If like me you have been an avid follower of other peoples adventures whether it be through blogs, books, or film you have probably, like millions of others, become a watcher.

I was a watcher not so long ago. I know what it’s like. You sit and scroll through endless documentaries, photo albums, journals and blog posts feasting your eyes on the experiences of these inspiring people.

People who travel and create and meet talented, like-­minded friends and do amazing things everyday as you sit at home hiding behind your laptop wishing that those things would happen to you.

But don’t fear.  You are not alone and I’m here to help you out of this minor blip and help you start living your life the way you really want to.

First we need to tackle the insecurities that are really behind your dissatisfaction. How do they do it? What do I need to do to make my life more like theirs?

The secret is so simple ( and the best usually are) and yet so difficult for many of us to start doing. The question you are really asking yourself is

How do I say yes?

How do I say “Yes, I like you” when I look in the mirror in the morning.

How do I say “Yes, I will go  to Europe” or

“Yes I will eat the double chocolate chip triple layer fudge brownie”

“I will join that pottery class”

“I will talk to new people”

“I will learn to play guitar”

and the list goes on.

How do you stop being afraid of the opportunities life gives you?.

We turn down so many opportunities without even thinking about it. We wish we could be more outgoing but we constantly hide ourselves in the shadows for fear of being laughed at or feeling vulnerable.

We wish we could have more friends but don’t commit to joining classes or talking to that person at a party. So many of us are guilty for underestimating the amount of control we have over our situation… or passing on the responsibility.

You may catch yourself saying things like “ I have a job so I don’t have time to do fun things” or “When I lose weight I will socialise more”

But this is not the solution. When you are in a “yes” or “no”  situation all you need to think about are these three simple things:

1.  Do you want to do it?

What was your first instinct? Before you started running through all the risks, the financial difficulties, the time consumption… Is this something that you want to do. If you had all the time and money in the world would you want to do it. If the answer is no consider, will this act help some­one else? If yes, will it be a burden or will the help you bring be worth the effort?

2.  Will this hurt the people I care about?

Most of us are able to recognise when an action will hurt others unnecessarily. Never skip this step. Sometimes  it is so easy to get excited about something without thinking about the consequences for other people.

See if there is something you could do which wouldn’t sacrifice your relationship with others. But sometimes you need to go for what want even if it offends the people you are close to. The classic example of this is a parents expectations of their child’s career and educational future.

3.  Can I honestly make this work?

If the decision has a deadline you need to be upfront and honest with yourself about if you can fit it into your schedule, if you can afford it at this time. Be really honest with yourself here.

Would you be able to afford it if you cut down on the Starbucks lattes?

Could you fit it in if you woke up a little earlier?

Life begins outside of your comfort zone, Netflix can wait.

Remember that although it is important to seek out adventures and pursue the opportunities you are given, sometimes life will get in the way and you really can’t make it work. But there is every chance that the opportunity will arise again in the future and there will be plenty more opportunities along the way.  So, don’t get too down about it.

Let go of the distractions!



I’ve been so proud of myself lately! My phone used to be such a huge distraction for me.

I would be sitting at my computer during the day and would be constantly taking breaks to check my text messages, Instagram, or Facebook.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that until a few weeks ago…I probably checked Instagram just about every hour.

What a waste of time! I would be telling myself not to do it and yet I would find myself berating others for their excessive social media habits while I myself was doing the same thing!

I finally decided a few weeks ago that I would just take it day by day. Instead of being angry with myself…I would instead resolve to only focus on the present moment.

The true test starts each morning when I start the day by listening to a podcast.

I used to try and multitask during this time but realized that it was so distracting and ineffective. Instead of starting my morning with some inspirational words…I would instead be scattered and would find that I would recall very little of what I had just heard, minutes before.

So, I decided to stay away from the phone.

And the not so surprising result…I am so much more focused! In every aspect of life.

Regardless of what I am working on, I know that I need to be 100% focused on the task at hand.

I know that this sounds very simple…but I’m sharing this because I believe that I’m probably not alone.

I’m probably not the only person who wishes that they spent less time on Instagram & Facebook. And I’m probably not the only one who would be embarrassed to admit how many times they check social media each day.

So, now I’ll turn it over to you.

What is the biggest social media distraction in your life? Don’t force yourself to be perfect all at once. Instead, try the method that worked for me.

Start with today!

Work on it a little bit today…and maybe even a little more tomorrow!

February Reads

Here are a few really good books that I’ve been reading this month!

The first two are by Steve Chandler and the last is Pam Slim’s latest book called “Body of Work” I would highly recommend all three and I would say that they are among the best books that I have read over the past 12 months.

All three are very practical and are filled with delightful stories and personal accounts which make for a more exciting read.





Most of us don’t love every little thing that we do on a daily basis. However, how different would our lives look if we really did use each act of work as an expression of love? Would we actually start to appreciate the mundane? Would we suddenly start to enjoy things that before only brought us pain?

I won’t pretend to have all of the answers…but what I DO know if that the way that we approach a task can change everything!

Think about the work that is in front of you today. How can you start approaching it with an attitude of love?

What can you do differently in you work this week to really bring out the best that you have to offer. In what ways could you add just a little drop of creativity into your task/project or job and how would that alter everything else that you do?

Action step for the day: Take 10 minutes right now and think through either your current day or your day tomorrow. What is one way that you can show your love through the work that you do?

Make it a day that you can be proud of!

3 Things That Will Change Your Week!

Last week I read an amazing blog post by Nisha Moodley. In the post she talked about how she chooses 3 things to focus on each week and how it has worked really well for her for the past 7 years.  I was so inspired by and interested in this idea that I decided to try it out for myself.

Last week I chose the following 3 areas to focus on:

  • Meditation daily (3 times)
  • Drink 8 glasses of water a day
  • Exercise daily (at least one time for 15 minutes)

I wanted to make each of the goals simple enough that I wouldn’t be overwhelmed, however, I also wanted them to be worthwhile and things that I would be proud of myself for sticking with.

Starting your own business is a process and journey that can be extremely intimidating because there are always so many things to be working on but you don’t always know where to start. As a result, the three things that I chose are activities that I find often get thrown aside.

Health is one of the most important aspects of my life and I know that whenever I am taking care of myself, I seem to do better in all aspects of life.

I’ve found that this has bee such an effective way to incorporate new habits. Sometimes it can be easy to get overwhelmed when there are so many things that you want to be working on.

I would encourage each one of you to try out this method this week! It works well to start a new habit on Sunday but really you could begin on any day of the week. Give yourself 5-10 minutes to think through what you would want to work on this week.

Creating lasting change is not about being perfect or changing everything, but taking small daily steps over an extended period of time!
